Oil quality monitor is a program, not a sensor....

The oil quality monitor will count down “percent of oil life left” and when the usable life of the oil gets too low, the car will display a service the car message. The oil life monitor is actually a software program that monitors the number of starts, distance driven, average speed, etc. to calculate the usable oil life. As I recall, the calculated oil life will be between 8000 and 15,000 miles.
Some of us on this BB believe the oil monitor prediction is just too long between changes. My 2005 9-3 Aero is currently at 60% life left after 4000 miles of stop and go city driving with most trips under 15 miles. That calculates to 10,000 miles (and about 12.5 months) recommended oil change. That is just too long in my opinion. I would be more comfortable with about 7500 miles under those driving conditions. I plan to pay to have the oil changed at 5000 miles (the 50% point), but not have the oil monitor reset at that time. Then when the oil monitor says that it is time to change the oil at about 10,000 miles, I will let Saab do the oil change and reset the oil monitor (which will be covered by the Saab 3-yr free maintenance program). That way, the oil changes are more often and about equally spaced.
