Well, if you've been reading here and looking at the cars with a lot of miles on them, the majority won't be the same kind of car as the one you'd be getting, since the newer 9-3ss has only been around since 2003 (2004 for the convertible). I think the problems will tend to be different with the newer car - but that said, I'm no mechanic, so I don't really know the specifics. Also, there tend to be a lot of problems posted here whereas there are a lot of people out there with Saabs who don't post and don't have major issues. It tends to be that way with most BBs (check out any of the motorcycle boards, for example). My SO has a 2001 9-3 SE that has had no problems in four years, she isn't a member here, though and doesn't read or post. And before that she had an '87 9000 that had some minor problems but probably no more than a few thousand dollars worth in many years driving. Neither one of us does any mechanical work on our own cars.
A reliable old Corrolla could go for 150K miles with no maint but tires and oil changes, or if you happen to be the unlucky one, it could be in the shop regularly for major work. If you're really worried about the after warranty costs, maybe you should think about leasing? Or pay it off in four years and then trade it for a new one?
