Verts always a year behind..... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: question about SAAB 9-3 Linear, Tom, Thu, 16 Jun 2005 10:43:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You got it right. Up to 2002 the 9-3 sedans, which where all 9-3SE's in 2002, was the older hatchback bodystyle. The Verts carried on this configuration to the 2003 model year. Convertibles from European makers all seem to take an extra model year when the sedans are refreshed. For 2003 the sedans became all new, body, engine, tranny, everything inside and out. I don't think there are any common parts. These 2003 and up sedans are referred to as 9-SS the "SS" meaning SportSedan and instead of SE's, the models became Linear - base model, Arc luxury model, the sport modelwas the Vector 2003/Aero 2004+, the Vector name only lasting the one model year 2003 and then changing to Aero for '04 & '05.
At the top of the this page you'll see the catagories, "NG900 & OG9-3" which refers to the sedans/hatchbacks from 1994-2002 and Verts from 1995-2003. 900's became 9-3's in 1999 when the 9000 became the all new 9-5.
The 9-3SS has been very popular, driving American Saab sales to an all time record in 2003. Many folk lament the loss of the hatchback versatility, but for some reason won't consider the ultimate hatchback the 9-5 SportWagon. Many folks also lament the loss of the "traditional" Saab design, as the 9-3SS is all new, and again these same folks might consider a 9-5. IMO the 9-3SS is a much better machine than the one it replaces, although the oldder design has a lot of charm, particularly the super high performace Viggen models.
