Audis and Mercedes are generally considered somewhat less reliable than Saabs by recent surveys. Acuras, Infiniti and Audi resale all stink, by the MSRP measure. Lexus, BMWs and MBs depreciate like rocks too, but do show a better percentage retained of the original MSRP, because they are generally sold closer to MSRP without incentives.
One car shopper was even telling my of a serious surging issue encountered by the usually unflappable Lexus in the ES line that was causing Lemons and pre-lemon buybacks.
In the past one had many more choices if a unique automotive identity was important. Alfa, Fiat, Lancia, Peugeot, Renalt Citroen, Rover, Triumph, Austin, have all gone by the wayside and Volvos and Audis have become maintstream and common. Saab comes up as the one uniquely styled and engineered, the most exclusive of the cars availible today. And the silver lining is that Saabs have done very well in recent reliability ratings, not perfect in everyone, but better than a lot of common Japanese brands and better than many competitive European sedans.
So to "Maintain Your Identity" with an automotive purchase, a Saab is a good candidate. And if you want safety, turbo performance and Swedish style to go with it, you should compare a Saab to your list of supposedly better cars.
