I had a similar problem with my 9-3. I got the car in Feb '03 and about a year later, also with less then 8k on the odometer the tires- Pirelli P-Zeros were shot. I could not believe how worn they were.

It wasn't the car, it was the tires. The roads in the NYC area are more like the moon. Why Saab insists on putting high speed, high performance tires in one of their biggest markets where the roads are in simply horrendous shape is beyond me.

I noticed the wear problem when the handling and braking capabilities seemed to deteriorate. Also, the car became harder to steer-- the grooves in the road seemed to have more control then I did.

Since changing the tires the car's handling- especially in the rain- improved dramatically. Now if the engineers at Saab would just smarten up and see the light too.

By the way, there was some sort of compensation from Saab for the replacement of the tires. Unfortunately I was too late to get the meager amount they were offering (something like $75--not much considering the new tires were $700).
