In my experience I have never had a customer with a break-in issue, that is a problem caused by something the owner did or didn't do during the break-in period. I have experienced the increased performance of an engine that was broken-in hard.
We just don't have the roads or the driving environment in the US, like with an autobahn, to put a new car in a high load high rpm situation that possibly, and still very unlikely IMO, would cause a break-in issue.
Modern magazine road tests seem to indicate a slight improvement in performance for most vehicles somewhat past 5,000 miles, around the 10,000 mile mark, far beyond what could be considered the "break-in period" or normally 6,000 - 1,500 miles.
Don't torture yourself, I say run 'em hard, get 'em used to it, find the weakpoints in the warranty period. Modern engines are race spec with over 100hp per liter or more. Don't sweat the break-in.
