This is my third car with XM and the first that I used the Aux input. It sounds so much better than a setup with a hard-wired FM modulator that will never even consider an FM modulator again. I, too, don't want to give up the input so I may wire in a switch so that the input jack is available again. I bought the parts, but haven't done it yet.
Also, there is no reason to put the XM antenna on the roof or on the trunk or anywhere else on the outside of the car. After reading through many threads on a couple forums, I decided to try it in the rear window. It works just as well there as it does on the roof. In fact, I can't even tell the difference if I drive through a tunnel or a parking garage. It works just as well. Remember, it must be stuck to metal, though (the metal acts as a ground plane for the antenna). I lifted the covering on the rear deck and put it just behind the center latch attach point.
