I have a 2004 9-3SS. At ~45,000, the dealer replaced the gasket on the drivers door. It was torn about midway up the rear pillar. The dealer told me that I must have closed the seatbelt in the door. I didn't think this was the cause. The seatbelt never fails to retract. They didn't charge me for the replacement, so I didn't give it much thought after that. At ~61,000 miles I noticed that the gasket was torn again, even worse than the first time. The dealer had their body shop manager look at it. He told me that he replaces a lot of these gaskets, not just on SAAB, but on GM trucks and Pontiacs. He said that I most likely brush against it getting in and out of the vehicle.
My brother has 20+ years experience in collision repair. He told me that this sounds like a BS answer. His thought was that the door is slightly out of line and that, in the course of the normal driving, that the car body flexes. While he said that this is not something that you're normally aware of, it may be causing a misaligned door to put stress on the section of the gasket that's torn.
It just seems odd to me that the gasket would tear in the first place, much less tear a second time after another 15,000 miles.
Does anyone have anything experience with a problem like this?
