It is a separate unit. I have my Sirius unit mounted in an open space under the center ash tray/coin holder. The unit prevents me from opening the ash tray/coin holder but how often do you really use that? That's why I chose Sirius over XM: Because Sirius had the only receiver short enough to fit in that small space. Plus, there are no unsightly wires since they simply exit from the back of the unit and are integrated behind the dash. The unit is a little low for my taste, but to me that is better than having it mounted up on the top of the dash with velcro and wires going every which way.
I believe the XM unit that people are talking about now is called the Commander, and it is integrated into the ash tray/coinholder itself. I think there is a picture of it on another thread on this bulletin board. Had they had this kit when I bought my car a year ago I probably would've gotten it installed since it looks a little more professional than what I have. Plus, apparently the XM kit allows you to plug directly into the audio system rather than having to use FM modulation. For 2004 model year owners like myself, though, the dealer would have to install an aux port first for me to do this.
