Since he also work on Volvos he must be aware of that Volvo changed the system in 1999 and went with a CAN protocol. Saab started to use it with the 9-3SS model.
On the 99 and up Volvo we use an interface box between laptop and car called VCT2000 to be able to talk to the car and on the Saabs, the interface box is called CANdi and you put that one between the Tech 2 scan tool and the car.
I don't know if there is any generic scantools for this new technology yet.
