You have correctly identified DRLs as one part of your headlight lamp life problem. The second part of the problem is the voltage. Lamps are rated at 12V, but your electrical system needs *at least* 12.6 volts to equal the open circuit potential of a lead-acid battery, and more than that if there's any hope of charging it. In years past, Saab electrical systems were a little on the low side, running around 13 1/2 volts at low temperatures.

That has proved to be a problem in hot climates, as the voltage from the alternator seems to drop with increasing temperature. I'd seen as low as 12 1/2 volts on my '91 9000's EDU and similarly on the "Escort" voltage read-out on my CE-CV. This tends to cause mystery dead-battery situations, and with todays low maintenance batteries it also shortens their life considerably.

By comparison, on the 9-5 I routinely see 14 1/2 volts on startup and never less than 13 1/2, no matter what the climate. Those extra volts do a number on bulb life, but it's pretty convenient to carry spare bulbs, pretty inexpensive, and a lot easier to install than a replacement battery.
