I used to own 2 BMW's, a 1991 318is and a 1995 325is. The first BMW was prone to problems like brake rotors (replaced 4 times under warranty!) failing and other minor stuff. After year 4, the problems really started. the second car was less reliable than the first, as far as minor stuff. Door handles, glove box breaking, seat leather cracking. However, those two never left me stranded anywhere. I have two Saabs now, and the 2001 9-3SE suffered from the DI cassette issue, and left me stranded, and the other one, a 2003 9-3SS ARC just suffered a gearbox problem that left us stranded in limp home mode.
I don't think it is unfair to say that BMW is better built as far as the core components. Saab is a bit weaker, but I do like the cars. My 9-3Se is reliable though, and I would chose this car any day over a newer one loaded up with computers.
