Solved!
To open the key: I had to insert a small pointy object into the tiny hole on the side of the key, which depresses a little locking tab. I used a large paper clip, straightened. Then I pried the back 'door' off the key using a teesey flat screw driver, like those supplied with eye-glasses repair kits. It took some muscle, but I was determined to pry that baby out, even at the expense of damaging the little screw driver...which I did.
Once the key was opened, I could see that there were small water droplets on the battery (16-32, available at Radio Shack). Using a hair dryer, we blew warm air into the key and onto the, removed, battery until everything seemed dry.
Then we put the battery back in and gave it a try. Success! The ignition recognized the key and the engine started. However, the 'lock', 'unlock', and 'trunk' buttons are still unresponsive. Luckily, the actual key still works to 'manually' lock and unlock the car doors; and the trunk button on the driver's door works fine, too.
So, the crisis is solved and my daughter can now be back on the road to report to duty on time. THANKS so much for your responses. It really helped to know there was someone out there to run this by. Again, thanks...and Happy New Year!
