1) with its iron block and aluminum heads, differential thermal expansion will always take its toll on head gaskets.
2) Despite it's "low friction" design, which has led to oil sludge and oxidation issues, the old engine lacks the efficiency of the new family. For example, the 2.0T in the 9-3SS has more power and torque than the 2.0 engine it replaced, yet does so with .2 bar (3 psi) lower maximum boost.
3) see above for oil sludge issues. Doesn't seem to happen with the new family of engines.
4) engineering support. The 2.3T is going into some 10,000 or 20,000 cars a year. The V-6 family is going into hundreds of thousands (Cadillacs, Buicks, Saabs, Opels, maybe some Alfas and Fiats). That puts the 2.3 at the end of the line in terms of development. Only reason it's around at all is b/c Saab and GME somehow can't put their arms around a 9-5 replacement and are unwilling to spend the $$$ to update the current 9-5 to accomodate the new family of engines.
