Ron, I was brought home from the hospital in a Mercedes Diesel in 1974. My parents bought into the whole Oldsmobile diesel scene until they clearly became just too freakin' disastrous of an engine to maintain. My aunt rattled around Chicago for years in a VW Rabbit Diesel. And I bought my first diesel, a VW NB in 2004. So, that's about three decades of diesel passenger cars in my family.
That said, there appears to be more of a diesel market in New England, where I currently live, than there ever was around Chicago, where I grew up. Of course, you can't buy a brand new diesel in most New England states thanks to the dirty diesel sold in the U.S. and that's probably why Saab doesn't export their diesel engine to the U.S. I know that VW basically has to dumb down its diesel engines so they can burn U.S. fuel, but that screws up their emissions, hence the sales ban in several states.
As for the biopower engines, I don't know enough about those to make a comment one way or the other. What I am getting fed up with, however, is the number of hybrid engines being dropped into Honda Accords to nudge their fuel mileage slightly towards the 30s. What a waste. Even on its worst tanks, my diesel NB got in the low 40s.
