But, you really should look at your total cost of leasing the car over the different periods. In Massachusetts, the first year excise tax (in addition to sales tax) is around $1000 ($83 per month) and then it starts to drop significantly each year, as it is based on book value of the car. (my 2001 9-3SE excise tax was $81 in 2005). If you lease for 48 months, your average monthly cost for excise tax goes way down (versus 24 months). Same thing with transaction costs. If you are paying $700 or more in up-front leasing and registration fees to enter into a lease every two years, that's another $29 per month. If you lease for 48 months, it averages out to less than $15 per month. All the less visible costs really start to add up with these very short-term leases. I prefer a 48 month, 12,000 mi lease, as the car isunder warranty the whole time, the total costs are much less, and, since I buy a set of snows in year one and run them 4 or 5 months per year, I can get through the leae with the original summer tires and the one set of snows.
