I would definitely compare a Saab, very favorably too, to other luxury brands, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, Jaguar and others. If the luxury brands were the same cost to maintain and insure then what would be the point of buying an ordinary car?

I've owned many luxury brands and many normal cars and I've found that the luxury brands don't really cost more to maintain for me. All cars require the same kind of services at rougly the same mileage, oil changes every 5-10k and major services rougly every 30k. By the time you've adjusted the valves and replaced the timing belt on many Japanese cars you've spent as much or more than for a luxury brand or a Saab with a steel timing chain and self adjusting hydraulic valves. All cars need tires and brakes too.

If the luxury brand is somewhat more expensive to service that's fine anyway as the payoff is generally better durability, higher quality of materials, cars that are worth keeping the 2nd 100,000 miles. There's also the better engineering, safety features, style and handling and the sheer satifaction of ownership of something that's more than a generic transportation module.

Luxury brands usually have better warranties, and many like Saab have free maintenance at first. One benefit of servicing a Saab versus other luxury brands is Saab doesn't have the $100k cars and customers to cater too, most Saab independent service places are fairly modest.

Speaking of independent service places, that's one of the best ways to keep the cost of a luxury brand in line with the normal cars, don't use the dealer after the warranty runs out.

As for Saab depreciation, the consumer magazines give Saab an average rating. Many of the luxury brands are the same or worse. I think there's a myth of superior resale advanced by some luxury brands, the truth is all cars massively depreciate, but the most interesting thing about that many times a late model used car will sell only when the customer doesn't ask how much a new one is.
