I wonder if the situation is similar to that of the 9-5. When the battery for the alarm system (not keyfob) starts to die, the alarm system itself starts to exhibit unusual behavior (like sounding off sporadically-regardless if the car is running or not).
It happened in my '01 9-5 wagon. The solution in the 9-5 is to a) replace the alarm battery in the control module (not simple, as there is some soldering involved) ot b) replace the alarm system control module itself (something like $500 for the 9-5, IIRC). The 3rd solution was to just yank the alarm system fuse, but that also killed the A/C (not wise in the summer).
Heck, for the cost of replacing the alarm system control module-it almost makes sense to get your car certified before it falls out of warranty...
