SID Brighteness, Anyone?

My local Saab techs. can not figure out how to make the SID bright enough to see in direct, overhead sunlight. The light sensor seems to "read" the light backwards. The SID is suppose to get brighter in bright sunshine in order to off-set the washing out effect of the sun. Instead, it gets brighter in the shade, and dimmer in the sun. The SID's purpose in term of location includes the safety feature of not taking your eyes off the road to look down in the more typical location of such data screens. I can't see it so I'm squinting, eliminating the advantage of the location in terms of safety. Basically, I can't see the damn thing and we can't fix it.
The local Saab techs have re-programmed the light sensor a couple of times and at the last visit replaced the sensor. Still, nada. No can see.
Can anyone help with this situation? It may sound like "classic" picky Saab owner stuff, but just try driving for sevaral hours at a time around mid-day with no SID visible.
Thanks,
DakotaKid
