Yeah, I've thought about that myself. First of all, though, there are new diesel regulations in the US that precludes bringing any diesel (as far as I know -- if someone knows differently I would like to find out) into the US right now. But Americans associate diesels (if they are old enough to remember) with those GM diesels of the late 70s. Also, since Saab isn't even on most Americans' radar screens as a car choice, I think it will be doubly difficult for Saab to penetrate any emerging diesel market.
I think that turbo-diesels offer part of a good short-term solution to weaning ourselves off straight gas, however. I am hoping that the cellulosic ethanol research pays off as advertised; forget about corn ethanol -- they'll never be able to make that cost-effective. Did you know that Brazil is now exporting ethanol fuel, but that the US trade barriers will not allow that in at a viable cost?
