The "lugging" below 1600 rpm in my '05 93 Linear (2.0t) with AT became more of an audible annoyance at first, but I started to use the manual feature to downshift to 4th due to some long-term concerns, valid or not. I find that when I need the acceleration at 40+ mph, it comes faster when I'm already in 4th as opposed to starting at 1500 rpm in 5th and waiting for an auto downshift. Since then, I've learned to really enjoy the manual mode. I use it about 30-40% of the time. A lot smoother and responsive than my wife's Mazda 6 with Auto/Man. With regard to MPG, I have not noticed a significant difference between full auto vs manual in around town driving. It's very good in the Linear, either way.
