Cptab- I have the same 300w, 13 speaker sound system in my '03 9-3 Arc. I have posted on a few threads on this topic and spoken to a few people in the service department at the dealership who knew no way around the rear sound quality issue that you describe. I am referring only to the sound of the sound system using the radio and music cd's. Someone here described it as the sound stage being programmed to be front and center, as is the case with most high end sound systems. As you have noticed, even when fading to the rear you cannot get the same quality sound as the front. I think this is more due to the EQ being locked in by software rather than poor quality speakers in the rear. You can increase bass and treble when faded to the rear to compensate for their lower EQ settings, but when you fade back to the front those settings will be way too high for the front of the sound system. If you fade it partially to the front, with the emphasis still being on the rear, you can find a spot where the higher bass and treble settings for the rear do not overpower the front. However, I find that this never sounds as good as just leaving the fader in the center. I can understand having a front and center sound stage for accurate respresentation of sound, but I wish there would have been a SID setting to switch between this and equal distribution of sound to all found corners of the interior. I doubt that there are Tech II settings to override this- it would probably require a custom programming change to the software available for the car. One of the service managers (who is now gone) at my Saab dealer alluded to a software upgrade to add additional amp settings. No one else has ever been able to confirm this, but I will be checking again. I belong to the All Data DIY web site and I can't find any reference to a TSB regarding poor sound quality from the rear of the sound system. I believe there was even a thread where a Saab engineer from Sweden posted regarding the 'sound stage' theory for the 300w sound system. Sorry for the long post, but except for your XM issue, I just wanted you to know that at least someone else shares your experience and opinions regarding the sound system. Perhaps we could persuade BSR in Sweden to issue a software mod for the sound system that could be loaded via the PPC module, just like their performance upgrade software. ;^)
