Just finished an 800+ mile trip from central Illinois to Nashville and back. Car (06 Aero auto)continues to perform superbly, with surprisingly good fuel mileage. Here are some specifics ...
Total miles at start: about 2200; total miles at return 3000+
Loading: driver (age 62) & spouse + moderate luggage
Tire inflation: 39 psi warm (driven one mile)
Ambient temp: low 80s to low 90s, most of the time 88 - 92
Average road speed: 75 - 80
Fuel mileage: 28.5 / 29 / 30.8 for three tanks (calculated, not SID); no substantial city driving
Observations: 1. Ride quality firmer than my 2003 Linear with launch pkg, but generally preferable. Effects of rough expansion strips and pavement irregularities were pronounced, but not offensive. Could have been moderated by lower tire pressure, perhaps. 2. Aero exhaust note not intrusive, but more noticeable than desired; could be tuned down 10%. 3. Acceleration, passing performance, and handling stunning. 4. Sport seats superior to standard (more supportive), improving long-haul comfort.
Malfunctions: One -- passenger side window sensed obstacle and wouldn't go all the way up. Problem resolved by local dealer Thoroughbred Motorcars (Saab, Audi, Porsche, Jaguar)in excellent fashion. In and out in just over one hour, including car wash.
Overall, car continues to impress. Some city mileage reduction compared to 03, but acceptable give performance and other features. For those trying to decide between 9-3 and Aero, pick the one you like and make a decision. $5 - $10 difference per week in gas cost a non-issue.
One cost management technique: fill the tank with premium, then re-fill at the half-tank level, alternating between 89 octane mid-grade and 92 /93 octane premium. Will save a couple of bucks per week, and hits the Saab-recommended 90 / 91 octane.
Car is fully competitive with Audi, BMW, Mercedes (all of which I've owned at one time.
