You got Classic 900s and New Generation 900s, C900 and NG900, entirely different automobiles, the C900 was the inline layout and in 1994 the first NG900 sedans had the transverse layout.
In 1999 a NG900 morphed into a 9-3, the car was relatively the same mechanically and only very mildly restyled on the outside. That is the model called an NG900 was mildly restyled and now called a 9-3 for 1999. That coincided with the introduction of the 9-5 to replace the 9000 in 1999. the 9-5 was an all new car vs the 9000, but the 9-3's were a carry over of the NG900s.
Sedans and verts changed the same year in 1999 instead of the verts being a year behind as in 1994 and 2003.
Now comes 2003 and the all new 9-3 "SS" for sports sedan and the 9-3's from 1999-2002 become "Old Generation" or OG9-3s to distinguish them from the 9-3SS.
