I haven't done a back to back test on a 9-3SS, but the rest of my Saab turbos, a 96 900SE and my 2000 9-5 Aero SportWagon run stronger on premium. It's subtle, but under full throttle on hills I notice. I also seem to get, I say "seem to" as it's impossible to run the same route on each tank, so I seem to get about 5% or about 1 mpg better on premium. The added performance and less than a 10% difference in price means I run premium.
You're not harming anything running 87 octane regular, the Trionic Engine Management takes car of everything. Try both and see if you can tell the difference and report back.
