1. BMW won the test of 8 sedans in spite of its stability control failing at high speed and almost causing a major accident--It should have been disqualified from the test ranking becausing such a dangerous problem should not be tolerated. There were a couple of other reliability glitches reported on the BMW--so here is another apologist review for the BMW.
2. The SAAB was the only car out of 8 fitted w/ all season tires the rest had summer spec tires. This means that in the exteme heat of the test in palm springs the other cars were at an extreme advantage in handeling.
3. IMO--SAAB would do much better in an automatic transmission test for two reasons. 1. When your not used to driving a turbo set up for max HP below redline you know that you don't go to the red-line for the best performance. 2. SAABs 6 speed isn't as quick shifting as many of its competitors.
4. I really think all auto mags need to give less emphasis on 0-60 and quarter miles times--How often do you drop your clutch at evevated rpm and smoke your tires, keep the pedal on the floor to 60 mph or a quarter mile?
I think 15-70 and 50-90 tmph ests are where I want and regularlly use power to get on a fwy or pass a car--thats what matters. (This point has nothing to do w/ SAABs in particular--but it does bias against cars which are geared for the real world verses acceleration from a stop).
