I-77 is a great drive..... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Leg #2, Boston to Raleigh, and saw our first 9-3SC....., BristowBob, Sat, 8 Jul 2006 07:13:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As my son has lived in NC for two years now I have done the I-77 drive numerous times. The best Northbound section starts about an hour south of Charlestown WV. Probably 45 minutes of tight twisty road with lots of elevation change. My 9-5 was a blast on this road and I am sure the 9-3SC will be too; nothing better than a turbo in the mountains. The last time I drove this section my speed warning chime was sounding the entire distance - and it was set at 80mph!
Our biggest slowdown on the drive from Boston to Raleigh happened in NJ. Monsoon like rains, lanes blocked by DOT trucks, flooded underpasses, and just too many cars for the road. We took the westerly by-pass around DC and didn't encounter any real problems other than a driving style which is apparently unique to the East coast.
The slowest cars seemed to always be in the center lane rather than the right hand lane. We saw this in CT, NY, NJ, MD, and VA. The trip through DE is so short I didn't notice it. In NY it got so bad with people bearing to the center and left hand lanes that I found the right hand lane to be clear and fast! Picture a three lane E-way with the left lane plugged solid with cars not moving, the center lane is congested and creeping at 15mph, the right hand lane is nearly empty and traveling at 60mph! The only thing keeping that lane from traveling faster is the fear of a 15mph car suddenly darting in front of you.
What color was the 9-3SC you spotted in Ann Arbor? Ironically I live only 6 miles east in Ypsilanti and have only seen a red SC on the local roads there. If it was Parchment Silver it might have been my wife or I immediately before we left town!
