OK, I can't believe I did it ;)
Meanwhile, my dealership, who has been very good to me over the years (Midtown Saab) is now owned by Roy Foss, and having met the new Sales manager and Business manager, feel confident that they're in good hands.
BUT NEED ADVICE ASAP from you guys...
They are now offering a bunch of "after sale" sellups that are not the traditional SAAB way of doing things, and while I know the old "never buy those, that's where they make their money" warning, I thought to be fair, I'd see if you folks had any advice... and since my lease is up, I have to let them know tomorrow (ack.. I enjoy doing the research)
Here's what they're pitching:
Boomerang stolen car tracking service (http://www.boomerangtracking.com)
- they SAY they can track your car via gps and other services - but I don't see how accurately if the theif parks the car three stories underground. And they don't have any sort of insurance in case they can't find the car even with boomerang.
The key has an encrypted immobilizer so I'm not sure if we'd be dealing with the kind of theif who'd have any trouble outsmarting boomerang.. Dunno.
Walkaway Insurance (covers the lease payments if you are unemployed, sick, get transfered to another country, are unable to ever pay again etc.) - but I haven't read the fine print. (insurance scares me because there's always an out for them if they want to find it)
Some sort of suplimental/extended warentee that covers a whole bunch of things "if they're wearing out, but not broken" - ie. the suggestion is that things can only be fixed under SAABS normal warantee if they fail completely, but this has not actually been my experience... also this doesn't cover tires break pads and rotors.
Paint protection (it's not called clear coat, but sounds like another coat of clear coat to me) they say it keeps acid rain, bird droppings, sap etc from dulling the paint's glassy finnish (it's the 20 years edition electric blue metalic) They say this eliminates the need for waxing.. ever.
Leather protection.. They say it's a special treatment you have checked every two years that protects the leather seating surfices from stains (my wife loves to spill coffee, and my daughter loves to spill everything :) but I'm not sure if it's not just simoniz or scotch guard. I am tempted though because these seats are very light cream colour.. ack :)
These two alone are $549 Canadain (about $480 US)
They also have an upgraded version of this that has a special kind of rust proofing that actually applies a continuous low voltage to the outter metal of the car to inhibit rust, and something called "rip tear burn" protection for the leather on the seats.
As for the rust proofing, My other two saabs I only leased for 3 years, so obviously rust was never a concern. I MAY (but not that likely) buy this out at the end of the lease (in 3 years)...
As for the rip tear burn protection, this one actually has the leather seating surfice repaired if it's ripped torn or burned. My wife quit smoking, and I've never ripped a car seat.. my big concern is leaving the roof down and having a downpour of rain ruin the seats but it doesnt seam to cover that.
These two extras approximately double the price of the paint and leather protection.
Also they don't seem to offer anything to cover the cloth top..which seems like the most vulnerable and expensive part that can be damaged.
Any insites are very greatly appreciated!!
(oh god, this is the first time I've felt like it was christmas eve since I got the viggen in '00 :)
THANKS
Earl
