We just returned from a two week, 2300-mile trip through the Southwest (Grand Canyon, Zion & Bryce Nat'l Parks, etc.) in our 2006 9-3 2.0T and thought I'd give a little report on how the car performed.
First, let me say that in the 7 months that we've owned this car, it continues to impress us more and more as time goes on. It goes like hell when asked to do so, tracks like it's on rails, stops on a dime, and cradles the driver and his passengers in comfort all the while. Our trip took us to elevations over 9000 feet (Rainbow Point in Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park) and the car was never wanting for power under any conditions. On the two-lane roads in southern Utah and northern Arizona, passing slower moving vehicles was effortless (as in, you're doing 90 before you know it). The seats were quite comfortable on the long drives, the A/C and cruise control worked flawlessly, and the sound system was more than adequate (even though others on this board may think otherwise). Fuel efficiency was quite acceptable, though my calculated average was slightly lower than the onboard computer figure (30.2 vs. 32.0 mpg).
We only had one glitch along the way. As we were cruising the Grand Canyon, the engine warning light came on, though the car was driving perfectly normally. I made a quick call to my service advisor who said that about 90% of the time this was due to the gas cap losing its seal. Since I had read numerous postings on this board regarding this issue, I took the risk of continuing our trip without making a side trip to the dealer in Phoenex. Sure enough, after the second gas fill-up, the warning light went out.
All in all, we just could not be happier with our 9-3. We sold my wife's Audi A6 and now the Saab is our only vehicle. Does that tell you something?
