I did this in my 2003 9-3 SS and it was very simple. I was able to get a used auto-dimming/compass mirror from a parts recycler and all that had to be done to install the mirror was:
1)remove the upper panel cover closest to the windshield
2)remove the old mirror using the torx screwdriver that is stored with the spare tire in your trunk.
3)plug the auto-dim/compass mirror into the empty plug that is next to the sunroof switch inside the panel.
4)attach the new mirror with the torx screws.
5)reinstall panel.
It was a very simple install, and everything worked as soon as I started the car. One word of advice, remove the panel before ordering a mirror to be sure that all of the wiring is there to install the electric mirror. I thought I read on another board, that someone did not see the wiring up there on a 2006 9-3, but I have a hard time believing that this is something that would be de-contented.
