Good to see another potential Saab owner.
To address some of your concerns...
1) On the Saabnet, you see posts for people asking about problems in disproportionate numbers compared to those who have good experiences. I have a 9-3 SportCombi 2.0 T which has had no issues other than a hatch that takes a little bit of oomph to close and an occasional interior trim squeak. Other than that, the car has been flawless as this is the same basic powertrain that has been offered since 2003 and the kinks have been worked out. That's why I would recommend the 2.0 T which has plenty of power (210 hp) for a vehicle that was lighter than your Escape. If you want more power then you have to go with the Aero's V6.
2) The V6 does get not that great fuel economy, another reason to go with the 4 cylinder rated around 20 city / 30 hwy depending on transmission. I get 23 city, 31 on the highway (manual 2.0 T)
3) Snow tires would help in the hills of Pittsburgh, but the standard stability and traction control keeps you out of trouble most of the time. I only now bought snows, had no issues here in the Detroit area's winters
4) Saabs last a long time and your B-to-B warranty is 4 years / 50 K miles, service is included for 3 years/ 36,000 miles I believe, and you also now get the extended powertrain protection on 2007 models.
To summarize, just get a SportCombi, you won't regret it. As you can see below, they look really nice when clean :-)
