When at the Aero Academy over the summer, I posed this question to our host, who was the 9-3 US marketing director. He said the lack of Bluetooth in the Stateside current model 9-3s were a matter of "lack of engineering resources", and NOT because of Onstar and its proprietary calling feature. Acura, for example-has had Bluetooth AND Onstar in its vehicles for some time now-apparently, no conflict of interest, there.
I was told that there was a possibility of a current 9-3 BT retrofit kit that could have come out this past Fall, but it is obvious that it has happened (?yet).
One could blame GM for not throwing SAAB a little more cash to make Bluetooth available for US models (or SCUSA for not demanding it for SAABs largest and most important sales market). Just a bad marketing decision, IMO.
My guess is that all of SAABs efforts have been solely focused on upcoming new models, and not on the current model lineup. Despite the 9-5's 2nd facelift in '06 (for a 9yo model) and the supposed '08 9-3 facelift (for a 5yo model), these models have not undergone quantum improvements when compared to its competition (well, the new V6 turbo in the '06 9-3 notwithstanding).
Ironically, SAAB introduced the world's first OEM Bluetooth equipped car in the 9-3SS-it just never made it Stateside.
