your engine is made in Germany and is a new design: no timing belt, very modern ignition system, all engineered to meet EPA smog rules for 100K. Trans is made in Japan and the only (early) failures were due to the radiator--'03 only--leaking coolant into the trans. That's been fixed.
So basic running gear, with synthetic oil are near eternal. The car's steel body is galvanized on both sides, has all kinds of sealants, great quality paint. There are only a few areas that might squeak in the interior, but my '03 has zero rattles, creaks or whistles. It's as quiet as my allroad.
I think the only repair areas of concern are related to electrics: motors, switches. The new 9-3 uses a very complex collection of modules--made in Europe, not Japan. All controlled by software--again, some problems at first, most if not all now resolved. It is this one area that makes Consumer Reports give all euro cars a pretty low "reliability" rating. If you have an after-market "high tech" warranty. you'd be covered on almost any electric or electronic device, excepting the sound system. Keep up good maintenance. Have your car cleaned and recoated (lots of aluminum on suspension) by the dealer every Spring, if your roads have winter salt, and you'll be driving it until we all switch to hydrogen. And every mile will be so much more pleasant than in a Camry. (Check out their website for electronics issues on the new models).
