last week, I noticed a noise in my front end when I turned the wheel at low speeds (pulling in and out of parking spaces). It sounded like something binding up... what I would think a bad tie rod end would sound like. The dealer said it was the caps on the struts in the front end and quoted me a price of ~$450 - $500 for parts and labor. Of course, they had to order them. They also told me that it was safe to drive the car in the meantime.
Since then (about a week), the car has stopped making the noise. Wondering in any forum members out there have any experience with this. My '03 has 92K miles and I am prepared to start making these types of repairs. I just want to be sure that it's really necessary (at this point), and there isn't other maintenance that I should perform at the same time.
The car seems to drive fine since I had heard the noise. In general, about the only thing that I've noticed as the car has accumulated its mileage is that it does have a fair amount of this type of noise compared to the loaners that I drive. I realize that a 3-4 yr old car with 92K miles will not seem as "tight" as a new car, and I'm wondering if this is something that can be dealt with through maintenance and/or parts replacement.
It's not a huge deal and I'm content to live it if the cost is excessive. (Assuming that not of this maintenance is needed for safety purposes.)
Otherwise, I'm reasonably happy with the car. No major problems, just little stuff that are more a bother than a serious issue. Still love the car's looks, it's fun to drive, and I am very pleased with the fuel economy. I'm sure that I'll like it even more as I continue to put more miles on it (assuming no nasty surprises on the maintenance side).
Thanks,
