These 4 cyl engines have over 6 quart of oil to begin with compared to older Saabs that only have slightly over 4 quarts so if you are one quart low, you are still plenty on the safe side.
It also depends on how he checked the oil, if he let the car sit long enough for the oil to drain back into the oil sump. At least 10 min with warm engine and longer if engine is cold.
