Squat is good place to start.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Thu, 8 Mar 2007 16:21:42 In Reply to: What's an 04 Linear worth?, Beck, Thu, 8 Mar 2007 11:50:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You hear that alot from customers, they're afraid of the value of their trade in, but it ain't always so. I recommend finding out what "squat" is from the dealer. Doesn't hurt, doesn't cost anything, and the dealer is a used car pro. You may pick up some valuable info on what your cars needs in terms of maximizing it's value. And you may just like the number and decide your time and energy is worth more in your field than trying to be an effective used car salesperson.
The difference between wholesale/trade in value and what you can get for it privately (retail), is lower for an automobile than any other consumer goods by far. Used cars are a valuable commodity. Likely your dealer will want to buy your car for the wholesale/trade in value whether you trade it in or not. Most dealers are progressive enough to give you a real buy figure without a firm commitment to buy.
Besides, dealers can sell the car for more because they're so much better at it and they have the significant advantages of: convienent business hours and locations, professional sales folks, a huge advertising budget compared to you, an internet market, and most importantly, they take trades ins and do financing. None of this can a private party do effectively.
So find out what the "squat" figure is and then when someone makes you an offer on your private party sale, you can compare it to squat and if you're clearing another $1,000 or more, it was worth the hassle.
