Ron: Why would the 10 mm difference in tread width( coupled with approx a 4 mm section height difference) make that much difference regarding rim damage? I have run 225/45/17 Bridgestone Revo 1 snow tires on my 2006 Aero SC in place of the 235 size all season tires and saw no issues with rim damage. I tend to think that rim damage, particularly in the winter, is a driver induced phenomena. If you are going to hit a big pothole,I doubt that the 4 mm extra sidewall height is going to be the difference between damage and no damage. Chances are tire pressure might play even more of a part in this. A few years ago,an "idiot" tech in my otherwise great saab dealer sent me out in my 9-5 Aero with 25 PSI in all four tires, and within a week, three out of four of my Ronal R-7 rims were bent, and that was without hitting anything. For what it's worth, I found the Bridgestone winter tires on this car to be terrific.
