The reason to run 93 (super unleaded) is that SAAB turbo engines can and do take advantage of higher octane fuel. That's because the engine management system regulates turbo pressure according to octane level. The higher the octane, the higher the boost (to a maximal point). With lower octane, the boost is reduced when/if engine knock occurs. With 93 octane, turbo boost is maximized.
So, if you want squeeze all you can get out of your SAAB turbo-feed it 93 octane-happily.
This is not to say you cannot get maximal boost from 87 octane (regular unleaded). It's just that the higher octane rating ensures maximal engine operating efficiency.
Unlike highly tuned normally aspirated engines-typical normally aspirated engines do not necessarily perform better with higher octane (since they cannot take advantage of the higher octane).
This feature was introduced with the APC system in 1982 or so, was was incorporated into Trionic. The V6 Aeros use a Motronic engine management system, but it also regulates turbo boost pressure according to octane (IIRC).
