I own two Saabs; a 2000 9-5 Sedan with over 195,000 miles, and "my wife's" 2006 9-3 2.0T SC with approximately 10,000 miles.
My 9-5 has been the most trouble free vehicle I have owned in 30+ years. I accumulate miles rapidly, which means frequent oil changes and other routine maintenance items, but no big ticket unusual maintenance in the 7 years of ownership.
The current 9-3 model was introduced in 2003 and unfortunately that very first year saw many electrical and automatic transmission problems. The poor reliability data from that first year continue to haunt the marque to this day, hence what you have heard. The good news is that Saab fixed these problems within that first model year! Cars from the 2004 and later years have not reported any of the problems that were common in the 2003 year, and are extremely reliable.
The 9-3 is the safest car on the road, and since 2004 has been very reliable too.
I hope you buy the SportCombi. I am sure you and your wife will love it.
p.s. Check the model year data on the internet postings you have seen that reported poor reliability for the 9-3, they will probably identify the cars as 2003 models.
