The reason you want to buy two tires (on same axle) is for tread uniformity. You want your tires (on the same axle) to have the same tread/traction/handling characteristics.
When one tire has 10k miles, and the other is new-the tires will not behave the same on the road-and you'll end up replacing one tire before the other anyway (say when one has 30k and the other has 20k miles). What I've done in the past (and suggest you do) is to buy two and keep the 10k tire as a spare. If another tire blows, you can always use the 10k tire in a pinch (only if it isn't a unidirectional tire, which is another issue altogether).
If one was a 5k mile tire, buying one new makes sense. But a 10k mile diff between tires on the same axle isn't a great idea, IMO.
