oil filter o-ring

I was reading some prior posts on DIY oil changes. The Saab manual suggests you change the o-ring when you change the filter, but no one mentions this one way or another.
I have an '06 9-3 SC Aero; what is your opinion on the necessity of this? Should the o-ring be purchased at the dealer? Autopartswarehouse.com has the filters, and lists the o-rings, but comes up empty when you click that link. Thanks.
