Per SAAB engineers in the late 70's the theoretical limit of effective FWD power delivery was about 250hp - 30 years later that still holds true. If SAAB chooses (or rather, is forced) to jump on the AWD bandwagon in order to stay competetive, so be it. The rank and file of SAABs lineup will still be FWD and will provide perfectly adequate dry and wet traction, so this is obviously not a radical departure from tradition. I see it as a welcome addition to a fine lineage of winter mobiles that have never left me stuck in a cold hard place.
Unfortunately most people don't even know how many cylinders their cars have but I don't think any of these folks will be herded into a top-of-the line Aero XWD purely on the merits of AWD. For the money and practicality I think those people are going to look at certain japanese cars before even considering a 40K-ish(??) SAAB just because it has XWD.
My motives for wanting one of these is exactly that it has AWD and can effectively handle the power the 2.8T is capable of putting out (350 hp easy) without the uncommanded lane changes of the Viggen or early 9-5 Aeros. This is what I've been waiting for and I welcome the addition.
