I am so compulsive that I record every fuel purchase and calculate the exact octane in the tank. I also note the kind of driving that I do as well as note if my driving only consists of commuting (which would be the same route).

As a result, I've concluded that I get about a 1% increase in fuel economy at 90 octane versus 93 octane. I think the performance is a tad better but it may be a placebo effect.

If you alternate between 87 and 93 and fill up the tank at exactly the half mark every time, the octane in your tank will dip below 90.

93 octane in tank, add 87 octane (exactly half) = 90 octane
90 octane in tank, add 93 = 91.5 octane
91.5 octane in tank, add 87 = 89.25 octane

What I do is to use 93 octane except when gas get expensive quickly, then I use some 87. I do...
93 octane + half 87 = 90 octane
then add 93,
then add 93,
then add half a tank of 87 and repeat the above cycle.

Anyone have a headache, now?
