Using my fingers, I pulled it down about half an inch and then pulled it forward. The retainer doesn't have hooked edges at the top and bottom that you need to worry about. It simply slides between the two sides of the molding and connects at the centre. I may have exaggerated how delicate this piece is, so don't be too gentle or you won't get it off.
By the way, I chose to use painter's tape instead of electrical tape because it provides an adequate barrier between the plastic edges, but it's not too soft (i.e., it won't bunch up when you reinstall the molding).
Good luck.
