Since no one else has responded, I’ll give you my two cents. I have a 2004 Aero convertible with 30,000 + miles, with the 6 speed manual. I have had no major maintenance issues whatsoever, some minor ones relating to the remotes, window pinch protection, software glitches, etc., all repaired at no charge by the dealer (Carter Saab in Seattle). I have had the standard free maintenance performed by the dealer, and have also paid to have intermediate oil changes at 7,500 mile intervals (not comfortable with the 15,000 mile interval, which has been a major discussion on this board). The car has been fantastic and I would recommend it highly to anyone interested in a 2004 convertible.
As far as comparing the safety to prior years, I remember when I was first reading the ads and brochures for the “new” 2004 model year, there had been significant changes (“improvements”) from the 2003 to the 2004 body style that caught my eye, including the Re-axis steering, number of air bags, stiffening of the frame, pop up roll bars, parking assist, etc. that gave me the impression that the 2004 model would be a much safer vehicle, although many of those features may have been included in the previous model in a similar fashion and I was unaware of them. Maybe somebody with one of those cars (or Mike Lynch, whose know the features from model to model in great detail) could give a more complete answer.
