Parking Assist too quiet

I recently traded my 2005 9-5 Arc Wagon for a terrific 2008 9-3 2.0T convertible. I really love my new car, but there are a couple of things I find troublesome. One in particular is the volume of the parking assist system. It is almost inaudible.
With my 9-5, the parking assist was loud enough to get my attention if I was about to back into something. Also, the system kept beeping until I shifted out of reverse or moved away from the objet that it was sensing.
But with the 9-3, not only is the beeping extremely soft (quiet,) it only beeps for a few seconds (20?) and then stops. (The manual says it is supposed to stop.) Even if I've turned the sound system down, I can barely hear the beeping over the engine noise, particularly when the top is down. I have to listen very carefully to hear it, and I am afraid that there will be times when I won't be able to.
What is the experience of others with 9-3's? Is this typical for 9-3's? Or might there be something wrong with my particular vehicle?
