As far as what brand of battery to use:
Costco/Kirkland Signature (if you have a membership) is probably the best deal going, as it offers a free 3 year replacement warranty.
If not, then Advance Auto Autocraft, or Autozone Duralast are also good batteries. These are made by Johnson Controls.
Interstate is widely regarded as a good battery but I think they are too expensive (you could just about get a Costco battery and a membership and come out even vs. buying an Interstate). They're also made by Johnson Controls.
Diehard--same situation as Interstate. Overpriced and again made by Johnson Controls--why not get a Costco battery instead?
Johnson Controls is widely regarded as the best battery manufacturer in the USA.
Batteries Plus and Carquest sell a group 48 battery made by Deka/East Penn that should be exactly the same size as the Saab OE battery. Batteries Plus sells it under the "Werker" name. I don't know how Deka/East Penn batteries compare to Johnson Controls batteries. I have never heard anything bad about them.
Finally, we have the Exide batteries. These are sold by Wal-Mart in some locations and by Tire Kingdom/NTB. Exide does not seem to have as good of a reputation as Johnson Controls, and in fact the failure-prone Saab OE battery is made by Exide (but is a different design than what you'll find at Wal-Mart or Tire Kingdom/NTB, having been made in a different factory on a different continent).
