I have a 2003 9-3 Arc with 2.0T 210hp engine and 6 speed trans, and I would say 'yes' it is a somewhat noisy engine when running. The 2003 models even have the secondary air pump which runs for a short while when the engine is cold, adding to the clatter. We're talking about the mechanical sounds made by the engine rather than the exhaust sound. This is only if you are comparing to a Japanese four cylinder engine such as those made by Honda or Toyota. The Saab engine to me has a more European/German/VW type of mechanical sound when it is running. That is fine with me however as I don't want something running as smoothly and quietly as a sewing machine under my hood. ;^) Many of the Japanese cars are so smooth and quiet overall that they have engineered the 'soul' right out of the car. Of course, this is what the average driver is looking for- the most quiet, smooth driving experience possible.
