I dunno' where you got the impression the cars had the same dimensions and the same motors 'cuz they don't. They're different cars with different everything.
The 9-5 is an "executive class" car by European standards, the same class as the E Class Mercedes or 5 Series BMW. The 9-3 is a European "large" car, same as the C Class Benz or the 3 Series BMW.
The 9-5 uses a 2.3 liter turbo four with 260hp, an engine manufactured by the Scania truck plant IIRC. The 9-3SS comes with a 2.0 turbo four, 210hp, or a 250hp 2.8 liter V6.
The 9-5 is a bigger car, about 8" longer, but the 9-3SS measures larger in every interior *front* seat dimension, legroom, headroom and shoulder room, but the 9-3SS has a higher cowl/dash or belt line vs the 9-5 and doesn't feel as airy/roomy. In actuality bigger basketball type folks 6'7" fit better in a 9-3SS. Rear legroom is another story, the 9-5 definitely wins out there. That 6'7" fella' in a 9-3SS leaves no legroom at all for anybody in the back whereas the same fella' folded into a 9-5 I can still sit behind.
