It could be that the newer 9-3 is eating rear brakes quicker since they have the more longer lasting harder brake pads in the front from factory.
That will move some of the brake force over to the rear pads which are still the older softer pads.
I just did front/rear brakes on a 2005 with 27K miles and the rear had about 20% remaining (front 30% remaining).
But that year also had the softer front pads so they wore more evenly.
